Communication Group
The primary aim of the group is to promote confidence communicating after stroke where speech has been affected. The Communication Group provides a setting in which members communicate with each other however they are able. It provides an opportunity to interact within a secure environment which gives support, encouragement and, perhaps most importantly, time.
The group operates with a maximum of 20 members, each with a level of comprehension/understanding that enables them to communicate and participate with other members in the group as well as understand the aims of the group. Initially, through informal discussion, criteria will be set by each member for themselves by which to judge any future improvement they have made in communication skills.
Despite advances in medical care and services, there still seems to be a need for more ongoing social support and an opportunity to keep abreast of what is available to those recovering from a stroke, as well as for their families and carers. Our members come from all walks of life and have each been impacted in different ways by a stroke. Some are younger in years, others older.
For more details on membership please see the relevant section of this website. We enjoy our time together and some great friendships have been established. We engage in a variety of activities designed to stimulate the body and brain. In addition we invite speakers along to talk about how to prevent future strokes, rehabilitation and general wellbeing. The club also enjoys visits from entertainers who provide some fun and laughter. New members are made very welcome. If you are interested do get in touch; we are sure that you will not regret it!
We are a club run by a team of dedicated individuals who provide an informal and friendly environment to help those of all ages and backgrounds recovering from a stroke and living with its effects. We do this through varied programmes designed to share information, encourage participation and social interaction.
The programmes include a range of activities designed for the interest and enjoyment of our members. In addition to quizzes, activities, music and other entertainment, we also enjoy visits from speakers on subjects of general interest as well as stroke-related topics. Each meeting's programme is preceded by a light lunch.
