What is Dementia?

Receiving a dementia diagnosis—whether for yourself or a loved one—can be overwhelming and bring up feelings of anxiety or uncertainty. You may have many questions about what dementia is, what causes it, and how it is diagnosed.

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of symptoms that affect memory, communication, and reasoning. These symptoms occur when the brain is damaged by conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or a series of small strokes. Dementia is progressive, meaning symptoms gradually worsen over time. The speed of progression varies for each person, and no two individuals experience dementia in the same way.

Common Symptoms of Dementia

  • Memory Loss – Primarily affects short-term memory, making it difficult to recall recent events, conversations, or directions. Long-term memory often remains relatively intact.

  • Mood Changes – Individuals may feel withdrawn, anxious, frustrated, or confused as they navigate the challenges of dementia.

  • Communication Difficulties – Struggles with finding the right words or describing objects by their function rather than name.
